A large sparrow with striking head markings. They summer from Canada down through the southwestern US and winter in Mexico and further south. South Texas is year-round range.
This one was not shy at all, bless its little heart. I stood with my lens resting against the back of the car as he fed in the gravel near the road out in my usual haunts, east end Apffel flats. I saw a couple of Osprey out there and not much else. But I’ll take a life bird any day.
This is the face you make when you’re eating sandspurs, I guess.
