Ruby Sunday, actually. I finally got a decent shot of the Ruby-crowned Kinglet I’ve been chasing around the neighborhood all winter. I was literally in my jammies and slippers in the front yard Sunday morning under the big oak tree out there.
In post I removed a noisy looking branch from behind the bill, balanced levels and sharpened (but not as much as usual!) When I get an SOC sharp enough for my liking I’ll let you know. Not bad for 1/250th second exposure.
Here we get a peek at the eponymous ruby crown which is hidden completely until this bird stimulates his erectile head feathers. Galveston is Winter range. Note the broken white eye-ring, and black legs with brown feet as good field marks.
Heh heh, I can see you running around the yard in your jammie. Uh, where is the “ruby crown” on this kinglet?

So, because it’s winter, there isn’t a crown?

I added a photo with some info about the crown. It’s not visible until he raises his head feathers. Same with the Orange-crowned Warbler. I got some shots with the crown in its red blazing glory but they’re all out of focus or blurred…
